Hello everybody its co-owner

is our one and only owner!
Today Tikcaru, a member of our anti-Sally club has given the club an editorial regarding some reasons why she hates Sally Acorn/Doesn't like Sally Acorn. So without further ado.... onto the editorial!
To begin, first of all, no I don't like Archie Sally in the least. Sally isn't wicked,
extremely cruel, or a heartless feind that's the run of the mill villian that ended up on the wrong team. However, my hackles concerning Sally were raised awhile ago, when I began to develop my opinion of my surroundings. Don't get me wrong, I've watched the SatAM in fact I enjoyed Sally from the cartoon growing up. But it's bothered me that Archie Sally is claimed to be the best form of girl power in the comics, when in actuality she possesses very little that should interest a girl who has an ounce of pride in themselves.
The first major sign of this came perhaps during issue #99, when Sally got the sword of
Acorns. The sword gives her a wonderful power that allows her to restore free will to the Robian
community under the control of Robotnik (#100), it's mystical powers also defeated Kodos perhaps
even finishing him off for good (again #100). Sally restores the free will of the Walrus clan
under the control of Robotnik with the help of the sword (#109). Everyone congragulates Sally
because SHE supposedly did all of these wonderful things, and in return appears useful to the
team. However it was the SWORD'S power that did all of these miracles, not Sally. But what
confuses me, and even angers me is how blantantly people judge Sally's accquiring the sword as
useful, let alone deem it as girl power.
There wasn't any practice, training, hard losses to learn from, no gut-wrenching attempts
to better herself by gaining this magic sword, she wavers around a pretty sword and *poof* the problems concerning Kodos andthe Roboticized Robians are gone. Sally had no strength of her own, every last drop of power she had was contained in the sword. She used it as a weapon that casts a magical attack/heals. But when she gave up her magic to the spider kids (In #111), every drop of her power goes down the toilet. She reverts back to her true form-- a helpless princess Peach, vulnerable to getting kiddnapped and without an actual essential or basic purpose in the story (Such as in issue#122-123). Signs of Sally's lack of use as a main charachter, is that she's become more of an implied charachter than one that actually does anything. (#130, Sally sitting with Sonic under the technolotree, not providing anything useful to the plot, #131, Sally kisses Sonic, and stays at the palace, not providing anything useful to the plot, she just wants to stay at her father side, which doesn't move the plot, or story and magically gives him a powering without any explanation as to how she got it last issue only to suddenly poof have it. #118, Sally's reading off of Nicole, but she isn't doing anything to better or worsen the situation, otherwise. #106, Sally tries to make a deal with Station Square, but it's Sonic that moves things along by giving the city a promising proposal, #122-123, Sally was a helpless damsel that relied on Sonic and Mina to save her and throughout the comic's history has been the damsel. #124-125 Sally is researches from Nicole's data for the Xorda, making Nicole useful. Sally follows Sonic because she wants to be at his side whether he lived or died (however when he made an attempt to stop the dial Sally was making no moves to be at his side), reading off of Nicole's readings that would indicate overkill unto the planet).
Basically Sally teaches that power comes from without, not from within. She can't win with hard work and determination/training, only if daddy's sword arrives, with pretty mystical powers.
So what would be the basic message in terms of gender:To be female is to be useless, girls can
only win if their offered outside help. If the help is taken away, the girls fail.
This is also reinforced by the continual usage of Nicole, Sally's mini-computer. Sally
doesn't fight alongside her teammates, Sally doesn't give any words of wisdom, Sally simply asks
Nicole to do a command for her to anylize data and reasearch (especially in #124-125). This again
reeks of power from without. Sally has to rely on Nicole to at least seem useful. People tend to
overlook this because we live in an age where we are highly dependant on technology for things
such as lighting our houses and typing on the computer. I can admit I'm dependant on technology, but in no way am I declaring that it's an example of girl power like people have done so with
Sally Acorn.
Another thing that has upset me, is that Sally has been overrated as a charachter , even
in the beginning of the comics to now. Sally seems to be getting spotlight and development more
than any other main charachter aside from Sonic, including perhaps the most backround. Do we
really know much about whose Bunnie's parents are? Or where she grew up? Who were the key
people/scenarios in her past that made her who she is today? Do we really know much about
Antoine's mother? Rotor's father? No, but we sure do know whose Sally's parents are, and in
"Royal Signet" (#120) we get a more deep insight on how Sally's losses have mentally affected
her, and the key players in Sally's life one being Rosie and another name Julayla, her mentor.
I'm more angered the fact that it's all because Sally's Sonic's primary love interest does she
get all of these riches. It can't possibly be because she's a token female because Bunnie
would've been just as rounded as she was with that logic. So what other reason could explain it?
How does being a love interest automatically makes her eligible for holier than thou treatment?
*sigh* and now onto my veiw on the relationship between her and Sonic. I don't like it at
all, in fact I can openly say I HATE the relationship. Within the past 40 issues Sally appears to
be nothing more than an emotional damsel from a soap opera shojo anime.
Sally selfishly puts her comrades... even herself in danger because she's upset,
believing that she cannot have Sonic after Mina kissed Sonic in issue#99. First of all, Sally had
the right to feel sad, and hurt but she didn't have the right to act so selfishly, because she
wanted to avoid Sonic, to avoid her pain. Sonic was the essential member of the team, vital for
things to get done, and to better their chances at having them saftely done at that. Sonic and
Sally weren't a couple back then and if they were, Sonic wouldn't have to assume what having a
girlfriend would be like in "The trouble with Grrrls (Issue#111)." Sally wouldn't have to mention
that Sonic would run from the hills if he was confronted with committment in issue #60 if in fact
they were already together. So why was she so obligated to to act so selfish and avoidant towards
Sonic if she wasn't his girlfriend. In normal circumstances, it's best to stay away from cheating
lovers because they might tempt you to get back together, simply for them to cheat again. But
Sonic wasn't cheating, Sonic wasn't her boyfreind. And "the mission is supposed to come before
all else", despite any hurt feelings, wether he was cheating on her or not, isn't that right
Sally? Isn't that what she said in a Brave New World, quite contradicting aren't we (Sonic super
special#2)?
She was simply more concerned because of not being able to have him, having him more
than actually caring about him. She would rather keep away from him, confuse him (#99), and waste
ten years of friendship, than to actually stay by his side as a friend. If Sally really cared for
Sonic, it wouldn't matter wether his romantic interest was ever in her or not. What should matter
is that you can still love him as a freind, instead of cherishing no form of relationship at all.
Sally's actions in issue#99 make me continually question their so called "Strong bond since
childhood." if Sally's was so easily broken by Mina mongoose kissing Sonic. This is an excellent
example that Fuu Huojji put quite nicely: "Time has little consequence to the heart." Childhood
freinds, and allies through a ten year war, does not automatically equal "Sonic and Sally are in
love with each other simply because they have feelings for each other!" If she can't be a loyal
friend, why should she be his girlfriend? After all, Sally even admitted in a Brave new world "It's about knowing what I HAVE" concerning a relationship, when Geoffrey talked to her about it
(Sonic Super Special#2). But wait! When Mina tells Sally in #109 that the kiss wasn't anything
romantic, Sally openly becomes friendly to Sonic again because there's still a chance she can
still have him (as hinted in various issues later such as the mecha tails/Sonic issue).
To care about somebody only when you think they hold you in their romantic interest isn't love, it's called possession. To act caring only if you can have that person. If Sally really cared about loving Sonic she could've easily have done that without being his girlfreind. You don't have to be there for a person and be a loving kind person to the other person only if you "have" them. But Sally was so consumed in having Sonic that she had to put that above what really should've counted: Loving him even if the kiss held any significance to an official romantic comitment between the two like she thought.
What urks me, is that when Sally was hurt and sad after "The kiss" in #99, we're all
supposed to boo hoo hoo for Sally-girl, but It's: "Fight for you're love, Sonic!" When Sally admits she likes Sonic more than Geoffrey in a brave new world, and interestingly enough she allows Geoffrey to nearly kiss her with a smile on her face before Sonic interveined.
Lastly, what I can't stand the most between Archie Sonic+Sally is the sappy affection
that quickly followed issue#123. Before then, they didn't show any signs of affection towards each other, and then *poof* it's: "Honey, sweetie, darlin', pumpkin'" UGH! I wanted to regurgitate my dinner! They hug kiss, hug and kiss. Even though these two charachters have had trouble expressing their feelings and affections for many years, they automatically become affectionate
with each other the very issue after Mina gets shot. More proof that she's selfish? Sally didn't
even consider Mina's feelings, she's just: "YAAAAAAY! MINA'S OUT OF THE WAY AND I CAN HAVE SOOOOONIC!" After the poor girl just saved her life. then Sonic gets taken away from Sally in
#125, and returns in #130.
More sap. "OHHH SOOONIC!!1111 I knew you'd come back to me!!!111" Says Sally, which I
honestly find pathetic. Right, okay. On the front cover of issue#131, It blatantly tells us that
Sonic's family and friends thought of him dead. Furthermore, when Sonic and Sally were first reunited, in #130, Sally just grabs Sonic and kisses him. No blood tests no second guesses, she
just KNOWS it's Sonic, even after claiming "He's gone." and "Life's too short." (both in #125)
which also tells us that she thought he was dead. Contradicting her statement that she knew he
was comming back, which is another reason I roll my eyes at her romantic sap, because her words
hold little substance. And After Hershey Cat so easily impersonated Sonic in Endgame (and how
everyone fell for it), where was Sally--- or anyone in the palace going to ask themselves if he
was the real thing? I thought it was a little melodramatic and stupid for her/everybody else to
just cling onto him like that out of nowhere.
I don't understand how kissing and sweet words
prove they love each other, because they don't. They only prove how affectionate they are with
each other, and words are cheap. You can tell anyone just about anything these days. The
difference between affections and love, is that with affections, it's not essential to care about
the person in any way shape or form. You could kiss and have intercourse with a prosititute, you
could hug your cousin, or some random person walking down the street, but that doesn't mean you
love them, despite the conventional beleif. When you give affections to someone, you love THAT particular person. When Sonic and Sally have been tested to prove their love for one another they fail. The Sonic/Mina kiss proved Sally was possesive not loving and the Sonic/Mina/Sally love triangle proved just how uncomitted he is to Sally because knowing Sal's feelings he gets up and flirts with Mina! Its when the heart is tested that truly will show the fanbase if they love each other, not simple affections that one could do with anyone. Because how your going to react with various different people when your tested regarding how much you love them will make you question and act based upon how much your heart goes out to them. Affections can be done with ANYONE.
Sally fans often tell me: "Well I can admit Sally's being written poorly, but I blame that on the writers. First of all, if you're going to blame the writers for the bad in Sally why not blame them for everything good about her too? Why not just like or dislike the writer, why even care about Sally if the way she's written by an actual person seems to be the only issue here when distaste is brought fourth towards her actual character. Why even like Sally at all?
My very last beef about Sally, is that she is so useless, that she must be completely
validated by Sonic to ensure a role for herself in the comics. It's been said and admitted even
by the Archie staff on Ken Pender's messageboard that, when King Max took the throne back, Sally
gave up all the power she had before, because she had been taking his place in the line of
rulership, and with him back, it would seem irrational that the king not handle royal duties and
major politics, due to the fact he's regained control. Easy signs of validation is made clear in
Sally fanart, just about every other picture you see in places concerning Sally fanart, you're
sure to see Sally posing or flirtatiously implying something with Sonic. Archie Sally fics
usually portray Sally with Sonic, not very often do they imply what she can personally
accomplish.
My question is, why do people want Sonic and Sally, aside from the nostalgic references of past history to validate a currently undesirable relationship, what do people see in it? I can't even begin to ponder how many times I've asked people why people like the current Sonic Sally, only to hear of something of a past refrence that doesn't portray the present, or a reference from the SatAM, which is a different universe with different interactions between the charachters. If you like SatAM that's fine, but don't confuse the fact that it doesn't portray Sonic and Sally in Archie. No two writers write a story exactly the same, Karl Bollers isn't Ben Hurst.
So it boils down to the society sculpture of the perfect woman, which I think Sally fits perfectly: Weak, useless, overemotional/melodramatic, and a timid inferior to men that is dependant and reliant.
I'll take my heroines in some fashion OTHER than Sally, thank you.

I honestly wish I could do such research, but I always feel rotten after picking up a comic. Yes, I'm THAT disgusted. The whole idea of Sally being a completely shallow feministic character never struck me. I try to remember everything good about her - leadership, planning, settling disagreements, yanno, the OLD Sally. But even now, when I look back on those, I can see the bad behind them. I mean, Sonic's trial after Mecha Madness! RRGH. I won't even go into that. XP
This is an anti-Sally club, ne? And based on this, sounds like you guys aren't just flamers. I'll consider joining.

Examples of this, is the fact that she's been flirtatious to Geoffrey despite considering how Sonic would feel in Sonic Super Special #2. The fact that she's been leading him on the idea that she likes him, only for her to accept Geoffrey's affections because she thinks Sonic isn't there. This may sound contradicting to my theory that affections do not automatically scream " WE'RE IN LOOOOVE!" But remember, Sally said "It's about knowing what I have." Which means she wanted know what she could have between Sonic or Geoffrey despite mentioning the fact that "My heart belongs to Sonic." Which isn't fair to either. So she's leading both of them on the idea that she likes them when this isn't true.
But when Sally goes into self-pity mode after seeing Mina kiss Sonic, we're expected to boo hoo over her because by default she's the underdog simply because she's a female whom in which is feeling sad. See what I mean? If that message wasn't clear, then why was she rewarded with Sonic in #123 despite her selfish intentions? Because people tend to overlook female intentions because " Oh she's a girl that poooor pooooor thing!" but it's "Fight for your woman Sonic!" When he sees her about to kiss Geoffrey in A brave new world.
Just a random statement, I hate it when people just think its cute for two guys to be aggressively, even physically engage in fighting over a girl, because she becomes this objective, this prize to be won. Usually the girl is clasping her hands together in a way that she seems as though she's sort of praying (stereotypical innocent posture for females) going: "Oh please stop! Let's talk about this please!"
Anyway, another example, is that we're supposed to be sympathizing with Sally and her current family issue in the 90's, despite the fact she made no attempt to mend the issue herself, nooo Elias has to run away from home in Family Dysfunction. You couldn't tell me when Sally tried to make her father understand that she wanted to be queen, and she felt that she deserved the crown after years of training to be a queen. No, I don't want the refrences from issue's -30 before then concerning this matter, because it was a different instance, and the problem had risen again in a different form, otherwise it wouldn't have needed to become a conflict. But despite the fact Sally does nothing, we're just simply supposed to feel sorry for her when she did nothing to help herself.
Lastly, this is off topic, but is it just me, or were some of you disgusted at the fact that in #125, when Sonic was supposedly "dead" out of everyone who was mourning it was SALLY who seemed to be the only one with an exaggerated amount of hurt. Everbody else was just crying in the backround but Sally had to be the focus on whom was hurt because she's the love interest, OH WOW! Why couldn't we focus on a charachter more neutral like Tails, whom had known Sonic since he was a BABY! But nooo we have to focus on JUST boo hoo hoo miss Sally.
Its hard to feel sorry for her, really. what ticks me off is that Mina took a bullet and nearly died for Sonic, and Sally fans think we should shrug it off, but when Sally gets all sad and hurt in #99, its "oh boo hoo hoo! poor Sally! let's go bitch at Mina for taking Sonic from Sally!" What ticks me off about this example and just about every other current delima Sally's in, is that notice that Sally's never tried to help herself and we're supposed to feel "oh so sorry for her". I'll at least give SatAM Sally credit, she was depressing but at least she tried to help herself out. That's why I don't give a damn for Sally's family problems, the kiss in #99, and is one of the reasons I'm mad she won Sonic. Did Sally even make an attempt to let her father or family know what was wrong? no, and I'd give her some credit if she did. I hardly found it dramatic. What I found dramatic was how bad Sonic was feeling while she was gone. Did she try to help herself find Sonic before the kiss took place? Yes she did, but did she have to wait nearly a year?! And she expects Sonic to still be moping over her? (I found that a little selfish) and even WHEN Mina tells her the kiss was a misunderstanding, and Sally realizes she's got competition, she still does nothing to help herself, and as a result gets depressed. And what are the fans supposed to feel? We're supposed to feel SORRY for her! Sorry for a girl who did just about nothing to help herself! I find Sally a weak character who as of right now didn't didn't deserve to be a leader of the Freedom Fighters (when they were in action). Its the type weak little girlies that society is costantly approving of. Especially in romance novels/shojo romance. The underdog. And EVERYBODY is suspected to like the underdog. Sally's whiny, clingy personality with Sonic is also getting on my nerves (and people still have the nerve to put Sal on a pedistol while calling Amy and Mina fangirls while Sal's been the one showing possesiveness. But its only because she so passive, that people undermine that). Hell, I don't even think they have the right to be even dissing AMY anymore, she's so clingy(not that I have much of a problem with Amy). She came from a strong leader, to a pitiful character, and degrading symbol for women, sugarcoated to be beleived as empowering. With little to no use as a freedom fighter, and the only thing one could consider unique about her is that she's a princess, Archie really shouldn't put her in the comics as much. If she can't be a good character in general, why should we see her with Sonic or so often in the comic?
WHY DOESN'T SHE WEAR CLOTHES?!?! All the other girls do!! Just Sally has to be freakin' naked. Ok, she's got fur to hide stuff...but still!! Plus, the guys in this don't HAVE to wear clothes, their fur's generally thicker ya know? Plus, its kinda a sign of masculinity, I think...no idea, anyway WHY!?!?! Sorry, had to be said
But your right, I saw Satam when I was little, I didn't like her then 'cos she bored me to death (I was three ¬¬
